Abstract

The present book deals with the structural characterization of paperboard materials. The main focus is set on the development of an engineering model for paperboard laminates for use in design processes. Furthermore, the bi-axial limits are examined and related to those of the single paperboard sheet, in order to enable the estimation of laminate performance from the properties of the single paperboard sheet on. Finally a simple model for failure estimation during bi-axial loading is established which relies on simple material tests. Nihat Kiziltoprak, born in 1990 in Torbali, studied civil engineering at Technische Universität Darmstadt from 2010 to 2016. He specialized in structural engineering, mechanics and material modeling. From 2017 to 2022, he worked at the Institute of Structural Mechanics and Design at TU Darmstadt and participated in the subprojects Design+Joining Techniques and Structural Mechanics of the interdisciplinary LOEWE project "BAMP! - Building with Paper", among others. In July 2022, he defended his dissertation with the topic "On the Bi-Axial In-Plane Behavior of Laminated Paperboard Components in Construction: A Representative Engineering Model". Since then, Nihat Kiziltoprak has been working for Krebs+Kiefer in Darmstadt, mainly on projects related to "Hot Design - Load-bearing Structures under Fire Loads".

Abstract

Laminated safety glass enables the safe construction of transparent structures. The mechanical behaviour depends on the polymeric interlayer both in the intact and in the post fracture state. In the present work, the mechanical behaviour of ethylene vinyl acetate-based (EVA) and ionoplastic interlayers is investigated for the intact laminated safety glass condition. In particular, the influence of the semi-crystalline structure on the stiffness behaviour is studied with X-Ray Diffraction, Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Dynamic-Mechanical-Thermal-Analysis. The studies on the mechanical behaviour of the interlayer in the fractured laminated safety glass were carried out with polyvinyl butyral-based (PVB) interlayers. First, the temperature and frequency (time) dependent linearity limits are determined in Dynamic-Mechanical-Thermal-Analyses, second, the nonlinear viscoelastic material behaviour is investigated with tensile relaxation tests at different temperatures and strain levels. Miriam Schuster, born in 1990 in Luxembourg, studied Civil Engineering from 2009 to 2014 at University of Luxembourg and TU Darmstadt. She focused and specialized on structural engineering. After working in the Luxembourgish engineering office Schroeder&Associés she returned to TU Darmstadt in February 2016 as a researcher in the Institute of Structural Mechanics and Design (ISM+D). In January 2022, she successfully defended her phd thesis with the topic “Characterization of laminated safety glass interlayers – Thermorheology, Crystallinity and Viscoelasticity”. Since then, she has been heading the glass and polymer unit of ISM+D as a postdoctoral researcher.

Abstract

This book deals with the analysis of plates and shells and is divided into four sections. After briefly introducing the basics of elasticity theory and the energy methods of elastostatics in the first section, the second section is devoted to the statics of disk structures. In addition to isotropic disks in Cartesian and polar coordinates, approximation methods and anisotropic disks are also discussed. The following third section deals with plate structures, covering plates in Cartesian and polar coordinates, and also discussing approximation methods and higher-order plate theories. Other chapters in this section discuss plate buckling as well as geometric nonlinear analysis and laminated plates. The fourth and final section of this book is devoted to shells, i.e., curved thin structures, following the common division into membrane theory on the one hand and bending theory on the other hand. This book is intended for students at universities, but also for engineers in practice and researchers in engineering science. About the author: Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Christian Mittelstedt, studied civil engineering at the University of Wuppertal, where he graduated as Dipl.-Ing. in 1999. He received his doctoral degree from the University of Siegen in 2005 with a dissertation on stress concentration problems in composite laminates. From 2006 he worked in the German aerospace industry as research engineer and from 2011 as a technical leader and expert in the field of structural analysis. He defended his habilitation thesis on the stability of thin-walled composite panels in lightweight construction in 2012 and is author and co-author of more than 200 scientific papers published in international journals, conference proceedings, but also officially recognized structural analysis manuals. Since August 2016, he has been head of the institute of "Lightweight Construction and Design" at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Darmstadt University of Technology.
